Saving a Limb...With Junk
Landmines are a huge problem in third world countries. Wars from years past have left tens of millions of anti-personel mines buried around the world. These mines are designed to injure, not kill the victim, and 75 percent of the time, those victims are civilians. The Red Cross states that the average anti-personel mine costs 3-30 USD to make but 300-1000 USD to remove safely. Therefore most mines are simply left in the ground after the conflict they were made for is over. These mines can remain active for years and cause many people to lose limbs or their life.
We are trying to crate functional prosthetics for those who have lost limbs to mines using only materials available to the people affected. These prosthetics are cheap, durable, and adjustable to fit any measure of amputation. We have designed them to use materials such as bike parts, PVC pipe, plastic bottles and scrap metal. Professional prosthetics can cost thousands of dollars. Our goal is to make communities affected by landmines aware of how they can make their own for ten dollars or less.
