Pursuing a passion...fulfilling a need
This year we are teaming up to design affordable medical equipment for use in the third world. Millions of men, women, and children are without the proper care; we are trying to help. Medical equipment is expensive, and when low cost solutions are designed, they must be shipped overseas. That is why our goal for this independent study project is to design medical equipment using only materials and manufacturing techniques that are available to the poor. These designs can be made for cheap or free and utilized by missionaries and aid organizations already operating in places of need. We are currently developing a wheelchair, as well as prosthetics for transradial, transhumeral, transbital, and transfemoral amputees.
As accepted students attending Michigan State in the fall (Go green, go white!), this class gives us the chance to develop our passions in the fields of both medicine and engineering. We've also discovered we have a real zeal for doing mission work and plan to take many medical mission trips in the future.
